A tale of two education systems

Nothing highlights the deepening class divisions in Ireland more than the education system, particularly at secondary school level. While the rest of public education buckles under the weight of staff and capitation grant cuts, Special Needs Assistant reductions and growing teacher/pupil ratios, the elitist private schools system has never had it better, thanks to the Fine Gael and Labour government.

3,000 march in Donegal to defend schools

Author:

3,000 parents. teachers and students protested this weekend in Donegal against education cutbacks.

The crowds from all over the North West marched through Letterkenny calling for Minister Ruauri Quinn to resign.

Donegal will lose up to 30 teaching posts but the people of the county look set to resist.

The fact that the Minister was forced to retreat on the DEIS schools shows that people power can win and that a sustained campaign of protests in the cities and in rural Ireland can win

The Donegal campaign is set to continue their protests.

Mass Meeting in Ennis opposes school cutbacks

Author:

There was a huge meeting recently in Ennis over school closures. Similar meetings were run in Tralee and Ballina in Mayo on the same evening.

At the Ennis meeting, 600 chairs were put out in the room but another 200 people were left standing as the space provided was the size of a football field.

Slides were used to show how the cut backs are going to impact on small schools by gradually increasing the pupil teacher ratio.
