Everyone says they are against exploitation, but the way the media puts it exploitation is something exceptional. Its just something a few ‘bad’ employers do to particularly vulnerable workers. Socialists say exploitation is not the exception but the rule in our society. It happens every day in every workplace across the world and it’s built in to capitalism.

Do quotas solve the lack of women in politics?

Minister for Environment Phil Hogan announced on May 30th the introduction of quotas in the electoral system. From the next general election a 30% gender quota of candidates will be introduced, which will then rise to 40% subsequently. If a political party does not adhere to the quota their state funding will be cut in half. The Minister said that “We’re deliberately setting out to improve the participation rate of women in politics." But are quotas really the answer to women's involvement in politics?

When US President Barak Obama met Enda Kenny on Saint Patrick’s Day in the White House, he promised to visit Ireland in May. Happy days! Obama then proceeded to make a far more outlandish claim that the U.S would “help Ireland recover from its economic problems”.

“We have had an excellent conversation about how Ireland is going to be bouncing back from the severe economic challenges that its experienced over the last few years”, Obama told reporters in the Oval Office.
