Tralee SWP Forum:
“…who is society? There is no such thing! There are individual men and women and there are families and no government can do anything except through people and people look to themselves first. It is our duty to look after ourselves and then also to help look after our neighbour and life is a reciprocal business and people have got the entitlements too much in mind without the obligations...” : Margaret Thatcher.

Another savage budget was presented by Fine Gael and Labour today which sees the burden of the crisis once again placed in the shoulders of working class people, both white and blue collar, and on the poor. So how can we build resistance to this budget? Can we get a General Strike?
In Spain the working class there have union leaders tied into the Labour Party and trying to hold struggle back. Yet the Spanish people took part in the Europe wide strikes on Nov 14th. Public sector workers blocked roads as the entire nation was shut down by strike action.

The myth that the Irish do not protest has been shattered in the past few weeks. 15,000 marched in Waterford against a downgrade of a local hospital; 20,000 people joined a protest against Ireland’s archaic laws on abortion; and 20,000 marched in Dublin on 24 November against austerity.
85,000 in November alone.
This scale of mobilisation is as high as many other countries. It indicates that that the population could be reaching a ‘tipping point’ which opens a new period of resistance.
